This one was a full tear-off and replacement on a wooded property in Connorsville, WI. Before any new material went down, we found rotted OSB decking that needed to come out. That's something you only catch when you actually pull the old shingles - and it's exactly the kind of thing that causes problems down the road if you skip the inspection step.
Once the deck was solid and clean, we laid CertainTeed RoofRunner underlayment across the entire roof. It's a high-performance synthetic underlayment that creates a reliable moisture barrier before a single shingle goes on. Think of it as the layer that keeps the house dry even if something ever works its way under the shingles.
For the shingle installation, we went with CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex in Burnt Sienna - a Class 4 impact-rated asphalt shingle. Class 4 is the highest impact resistance rating available, which matters a lot in Wisconsin where hail and severe weather are a real concern. Beyond the performance side, the Burnt Sienna color ended up being a great fit for this property. It has a natural, earthy tone that works well against the surrounding woods.
We also installed lifetime GAF Master Flow pipe boots at every penetration point. Pipe boots are one of those details that don't get talked about enough - they're a common failure point on older roofs, and using quality lifetime boots means that's one less thing to worry about for the life of this roof.
What we ended up with is a roof system that's built to handle whatever Wisconsin throws at it - and one that genuinely looks great doing it. The combination of a Class 4 shingle, quality underlayment, and properly sealed penetrations gives this homeowner a complete, no-compromise system from top to bottom.
